A Sweet Pansit
It was Hannah’s birthday. She invited us to her house after school for a simple salo-salo—nothing fancy, just food, laughter, and good company. Of course, we all agreed to go. Who would say no to free food? After all, it doesn’t happen every day.
When we arrived at Hannah’s house, we sat around chatting, gossiping, and laughing. After a while, Hannah’s mom came in with the food: pansit, carbonara, and ice-cold Coke. The moment we saw the spread, our eyes lit up—we were ready to dig in. We grabbed our plates and were just about to serve ourselves when, suddenly, disaster struck!
The leg of the table slid, and everything went tumbling down—the pansit, the carbonara, even the Coke. Before we knew it, the Coke had spilled all over the pansit, soaking it completely! For a few seconds, we all froze, staring at the mess in silence, trying to process what had just happened. Then, one by one, we burst into laughter—loud, uncontrollable laughter that even the neighbors who witnessed joined in.
Once we’d caught our breath, we helped Hannah’s mom clean up and fix the table. She decided to recook the pansit, determined to save the celebration. While she worked her magic in the kitchen, we continued eating, chatting, .and joking, teasing each other about our “fallen feast.”
When the pansit finally came back, steaming and freshly recooked, we all gathered around again. We took our first bites—and instantly noticed something different. The pansit tasted sweet! Maybe it was because of the Coke that had soaked it earlier, or maybe it was just the sweetness of the moment, the laughter, and the effort to make things right.
By the end of the simple feast, our stomachs were full, but our hearts were even fuller. We didn’t just share food that day—we shared a story we’d laugh about for years to come. It wasn’t just a pansit anymore; it was the sweet pansit, flavored with Coke, chaos, and friendship.
